In response to recurring climate-induced flooding across the Sudd wetland basin, EcoRise South Sudan (ERSS) has established community-managed early warning systems in Jonglei State.
Working with local Climate Champions and county authorities, river gauges have been installed to monitor water levels during the rainy season. Data is relayed through community SMS alerts, providing vital preparation time for smallholder farmers and pastoralists.
"By combining traditional flood forecasting with simple modern gauges and rapid SMS alerts, our communities can protect their seed stores, livestock, and homes before the floodwaters arrive," said Emelda Napeyo Patrick, Executive Director of EcoRise South Sudan.
